Malik Al Nasir On Slavery, Sugar and Legacy

  • National Library of Scotland 57 George IV Bridge Edinburgh, Scotland, EH1 1EW United Kingdom (map)

Award-winning author Malik Al Nasir talks to Hunterian curator Zandra Yeaman about his new book, Searching for My Slave Roots (Harper Collins, 2025). Malik traces his lineage — a story that intertwines enslaved Africans in Guyana with slaveholding dynasties in Scotland. He reveals how the transatlantic slave trade shaped economies, cities like Liverpool and Glasgow, and modern financial institutions, while exposing enduring legacies of trauma and privilege across generations.
