Black Sporting Histories: race, class and local league football

  • Yudowitz Lecture Theatre, Wolfson Medical Building University Avenue, Glasgow, G12 8QQ (map)

All are warmly invited to this free public lecture and discussion with Dr. Paul Ian Campbell, a sociologist based at the University of Leicester. Dr. Campbell has written extensively on sport, race and class. His pioneering ethnographic study of an African-Caribbean football club in the East Midlands - Football, Ethnicity and Community - won the Philip Abrams prize in 2017, and more recently he has published studies of the experiences of retiring 'Black' former footballers, as well as the ways in which race is reproduced through football commentary, and in computer game representations. In his lecture, Dr. Campbell will reflect on his research into black-led football clubs at league level, and consider what the experiences of those clubs and their members shows about the changing dynamics of race and anti-racism in the UK over time.
