A recording of an online talk given for Black History Month Scotland 2021 by Dr Peggy Brunache (University of Glasgow) which explores the cuisine of enslaved peoples and communities.

UNRAVELLING THE MYSTERY: EDMONIA LEWIS AND THE ISLE OF BUTE.

Edmonia Lewis was the first Black woman to achieve international recognition for her work as a sculptor in the 19th century.

Mount Stuart, a neo-Gothic Victorian mansion on the Isle of Bute, will be put one of her sculptures on permanent display in October. To celebrate the occasion, the Mount Stuart Trust organised a roundtable discussion on the life and legacy of Edmonia Lewis. A recording of the talk is available here.

Recording of a concert by Glasgow based songwriter and guitarist Nathan Somevi for a family friendly concert. Nathan's 2020 debut EP 'Can't Be Done' merited him a place on the 'Best Newcomer' list of nominees for Scottish Alternative Music Awards and is available now on your preferred audio streaming service.

Education, Race and Class in Scottish History.

Scotland's Slavery Legacies.

The ties between Scotland and chattel slavery can be seen throughout Scottish society and our built environment. Whether this in the Merchant City of Glasgow or the New Town of Edinburgh. Many of Scotland’s cities benefitted from wealth generated by the chattel slavery. Professor Sir Geoff Palmer's talk explores some of these ties, their legacy and how they continue to shape Scottish society. Part of Black History Month Scotland 2021, partnership event with Museums and Galleries Edinburgh.

Emancipated African Children in Scotland.

In the 19th century, Scottish explorers, military officers and missionaries in Africa frequently relied on the knowledge and skills of children. This talk by Dr Christine Whyte in partnership with CRER and Museums and Galleries Edinburgh explores some of the life-stories of African children who were brought to Scotland as part of the broader engagement of Scots in the expansion of the British Empire. Part of Black History Month Scotland 2021, partnership event with Museums and Galleries Edinburgh.

Black Sporting Histories

Recording of a panel discussion of Black sporting histories and of the significance of sporting practices in the struggle against racism.

Co-hosted by the subject area of Sociology, University of Glasgow, and the Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights (CRER), and featuring contributions from sports' historian Andy Mitchell (on the history of Black footballers in Scotland); from Dr. Anima Adjepong, of the University of Cincinnati (on the role of women in the Black sporting diaspora), and from representatives of United Glasgow (on grassroots football and inclusion).

Lunchtime Talks with National Graduate Schools

Throughout October; the Scottish Graduate School of Social Science (SGSSS) and the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities (SGSAH) joined forces to deliver a series of free ‘Lunchtime Talks,’ that celebrated the history, achievements and contributions of Black and minority ethic people across and beyond Scotland.

Celebrating Black Fashion

Model and broadcaster Eunice Olumide shared her experience of a transforming industry in an online event hosted by the National Museum of Scotland.

Woven Together - Dundee's Multicultural History Project Launch.

Edited recording of the live online event to launch Woven Together, a community-based research project to explore the history of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people in Dundee. The project is a collaboration between the Abertay Historical Society, University of Dundee Museums and Dundee City Council with additional funding support from the Alexander Moncur Trust.

JOM Charity Crossroads Virtual Exhibition.

Follow the link below to view a virtual exhibition co-ordinated by Johfrim Art & Design. The exhibition explores the contribution of textiles to identity and self expression. It also highlights the exploitation in the past especially during the era of Transatlantic slavery.
